No matter what kind of car you own, the time will come when it needs service. One of the first indications that may require servicing is when your car makes an unusual noise. Unusual sounds can come from many parts of the car, including the engine and brakes. If your car is making strange sounds, we provide some clues as to what the underlying problem may be.

Squeaky Brakes

The brakes are subjected to a considerable amount of stress. Eventually, they need to be adjusted or serviced to stay in top shape. The brakes typically make noise when they need to be fixed, which is a sign to schedule an appointment with our mechanics. If you hear a squeaking sound coming from the brakes, it might mean that parts are wearing thin, such as the brake pads and rotors. A mechanic may be able to correct squeaky brakes by lubricating it and replacing worn parts when necessary.

Engine Rattling

Rattling noises originating from the engine is the result of a premature ignition, which is also called pre-detonation. The problem may be caused by several issues, including the engine overheating, improper ignition timing, and improper fuel octane. These problems result in the improper mixing of air and fuel in the engine cylinder, which causes an early ignition and can damage parts such as the connecting rods, valves, and pistons.

Engine Clicking

Clicking noises coming from the engine may indicate that your car's oil levels are too low. You can try checking the oil levels with a dipstick. If that doesn't solve the problem, your car may have a problem with the upper valvetrain, such as excessive valve lash or worn or damaged parts.

Knocking Under the Hood

Hearing a knocking sound under the hood requires the immediate attention of a mechanic. This noise can be caused by a more significant issue, such as a problem with the connecting rods, valves, pistons, and other major components.

Engine Squealing

Several issues can cause a squealing engine. In older vehicles, the most likely cause is loose or worn accessory belts that operate components such as the air conditioner compressor, alternator, and power steering pump. In newer vehicles, a problem with the serpentine belt may be the cause of a squealing engine.
