German magazine AMS recently conducted an experiment to see how many leading automakers' Pedestrian Detection systems actually performed when put to the test. Each designed to detect pedestrians approaching the front of the vehicle, the safety functions are configured to automatically apply the car's brakes to avoid a potential collision. However, in the trial performed by AMS, only one Pedestrian Detection system proved to work as intended and the creator of the reliable feature was none other than Subaru.
Using a dummy and a pulley system, AMS was able to see how each Pedestrian Detection system would perform. They pulled the dummy in front of five different moving vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, MINI Cooper S, VW Up!, Nissan Qashqai and Subaru Outback, to assess their state-of-the-art detection features. In the video of the test, each vehicle can be seen applying its brakes as it approaches the dummy, however, most still managed to hit the mock pedestrian. The Subaru Outback is the only car to effectively stop and avoid the dummy, proving Subaru has one of the top advanced safety systems on the market.
