Subaru has come forward as one of 20 automakers to commit to offering standard automatic emergency braking on all of their cars by 2022. A move advocated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the initiative is being carried out in an effort to help prevent future accidents and improve in-car safety.
Automatic emergency braking is a system that utilizes sensors and cameras to detect a potential accident. The system signals drivers when danger is detected and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time. According to the NHTSA and IIHS, this system could reduce rear-end accidents by 40 percent if made standard on all new vehicles. It’s estimated a total of 28,000 crashes could also be prevented by 2025 with the system in place.
Subaru is committed to helping make these improvements a reality and will begin rolling out standard automatic emergency braking on future cars and SUVs in their lineup. Currently, the advanced safety tech is offered as an add-on on several models in the brand’s roster, including the 2016 Legacy, Outback, Impreza, WRX, Crosstrek and Forester.
