Subaru, a renowned Japanese automaker, is celebrated for its adventure-ready vehicles equipped with Subaru's own all-wheel drive system and advanced safety technologies. By 2017, Subaru had grown to become one of the world's largest automakers, with its vehicles enjoying widespread popularity.
Subaru's History
Subaru's roots trace back to 1915 when it was originally called the Aircraft Research Laboratory. In 1932, the company was renamed Nakajima Aircraft Company and focused on producing aircraft for Japan during WWII. After the war, the company diversified into other forms of transportation, including scooters. Subaru began vehicle production in the early 1950s with the limited-production Subaru 1500. This was followed by models like the 360, 1000, and Sambar. Alongside expanding its vehicle lineup, Subaru developed innovative technologies, including its proprietary symmetrical all-wheel drive and signature boxer engine, both of which remain integral to Subaru's cars today.
Subaru's First Awards
In the 1970s, Subaru started receiving accolades for its vehicles. The Subaru GF was named "1975 Import Car of the Year" by Road Test magazine, and the Subaru DL was nominated for "1978 Import Car of the Year" by Motor Trend. During this decade, Subaru also introduced the FF1, Japan's first front-wheel-drive vehicle, and the Subaru 4WD wagon, the first passenger vehicle with four-wheel drive sold in the U.S.
Subaru Adds Class
Initially, Subaru focused on producing practical and somewhat sporty vehicles. However, in the 1980s, the company began manufacturing more upscale and luxurious cars. The Subaru Legacy, one of its most popular models, was the company's first vehicle with luxury components, helping Subaru establish itself as a higher-end automaker. In the 1990s, Subaru introduced its first luxury coupe, the SVX, further solidifying its reputation for combining luxury with sporty, athletic qualities.
The Outback Appears
The 1990s also saw the debut of the Subaru Outback, which has remained one of the brand's best-selling vehicles. The Outback has undergone numerous updates and improvements over the years, continuing to stand out as a capable sport utility wagon.
