Subaru All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Expect a large selection of automobile features when you look through the different makes and models that are for sale at Reliable Subaru. Something that many of our clients are interested in is a large array of safety features. To provide you with ample traction on a variety of slick road surfaces, we recommend a vehicle that comes equipped with an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. While they may appear to be the same thing, they're different options.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

Your powertrain will provide power to both your front and rear wheels when you have an automobile that's equipped with an all-wheel drive. This opportunity comes with a full-time and part-time AWD function. The part-time mode will utilize two wheels for driving the majority of the time. When you hit an ultra-slick road surface that your vehicle is finding challenging, all four of the wheels will become engaged.

It's important to note that your all-wheel drive system will engage on its own. You don't need to take any kind of action inside of your vehicle to make the change to all four of your wheels being engaged. All of this is done automatically by a system of differentials, couplings, and clutches.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Large vehicles utilize four-wheel drive due to their weight and need for better traction control. Differentials are placed in the front, center, and rear of a 4WD vehicle, along with couplings and transfer cases. This system will provide power to all four of your wheels.

This is another vehicle feature that provides part-time and full-time modes. Unlike the all-wheel drive, where you have no control over your traction, the 4WD feature has low and high settings that you can control from inside of your vehicle. Switching to the low setting will increase the amount of traction that you experience, while the high setting will bring down your traction to a lower level.

You can find out more about the differences between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive by reaching out to Reliable Subaru at your convenience. Our expert staff members would be happy to explain how these features work, and we can help you pick a vehicle that provides you with everything you're looking for.
