What's New For the 2021 Subaru Outback?

The trim lineup has been reconfigured as the Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT (new for the 2021 model year). Conversely, the regular Outback and Premium trim levels are dropped. The upper-level 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine is now available on the "XT" variants of the Outback (instead of the Onyx Edition XT and Limited XT of the previous year).

The Outback Has Many Features Across Several Trims

The 2021 Subaru Outback, classified as an all-wheel drive crossover-styled station wagon, is split into Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT trim levels. Two rows of seats can accommodate up to five people, and the cargo space-32.5 cubic feet standard and a maximum of 75.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded-is excellent for a station wagon.

The front seats-the driver's side faces a leather-wrapped steering wheel-are heated and have power adjustability with power lumbar support, and the rear seats are also heated. Also standard is driver-side memory. The Touring, Limited XT and Touring XT trims have heated steering wheels and power moonroofs, and the Onyx Edition XT is the only one with StarTex water-repellent upholstery (instead of the standard leather).

Even at the base level, the Outback is overflowing with comfort and convenience features. Dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a garage-door opener, proximity keyless entry with push-button engine start, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system are just a few of the standard amenities on the vehicle. A navigation system is added on the Touring, Limited XT, and Touring XT. Note that the Onyx Edition XT is the only model with a six-speaker audio system.

What's Under the Hood of the 2021 Subaru Outback?

The Subaru Outback is powered by a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter flat-four engine with a continuously variable transmission. However, if you go with an XT variant, you'd get the far more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, which adds 78 horses for greater acceleration ability.

Packed With Safety Features

Central to Subaru Outback safety is the EyeSight suite of driver-assistance technologies, which include adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, lane departure, and sway warning, and lane-keep assist. A rearview camera, reverse automatic braking, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking also appear as additional active safety features.

A distraction or drowsiness mitigation system called DriverFocus-which debuted the year before-appears on the Touring, Limited XT, and Touring XT. And seven airbags provide protection if a crash occurs. Few station wagons are as safety tech-equipped as the Outback.
